Corzine’s ads always backfire

One has to feel a bit sorry for Gov. Jon Corzine and his campaign staff. Every time they try to criticize Chris Christie, they end up turning the negative spotlight back on themselves.

Corzine’s citing of Christie’s supposed ethical lapses seems laughable. Calling Christie to task for a $46,000 loan to a colleague raises a question: What about the hundreds of thousands of dollars the governor gave to his then-girlfriend, union leader Carla Katz?

Then, a Corzine spokeswoman called Christie “a complete menace to society on the highways of New Jersey” because of his driving record over the past quarter century. (“Corzine campaign slams Christie on driving record,” Aug. 28.)

She failed to recall the governor’s near-fatal traffic accident in 2007, when his trooper-driven state vehicle (with emergency lights flashing) was traveling at 91 mph on the Garden State Parkway because Corzine was late for a meeting with talk-show host Don Imus and the Rutgers women’s basketball team. Are there no mirrors in the governor’s mansion?
