Letter to Editor decries Corzine’s tourism cuts

Press of Atlantic City had this letter to the editor today:

Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s plan to cut beach-replenishment funds and tourism advertising is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard from a politician -and in New Jersey, that’s saying a lot.

First of all, if the beach-replenishment funds are cut, the state will lose even more in federal matching funds. Nothing like killing two birds with one stone. Remember, wide beaches attract tourists and protect property from storm damage (most of which would be repaired with federal flood insurance or by various government agencies).

As for tourism advertising, New Jersey already spends less than almost every other state that depends on tourism. Studies have shown that every dollar spent on tourism advertising returns many more dollars in taxes and fees collected from tourists and people employed in the tourism industry.

Do I have a vested interest in tourism? Yes, I do -and so does everyone else in New Jersey.
