Newsday.com had this great story recently:

TRENTON, N.J. – A panel advising Governor Jon Corzine on immigrant issues is considering recommending the state allow undocumented immigrants “driver privilege cards” and in-state college tuition rates.

Corzine assembled a panel on immigrant rights with the idea of passing comprehensive immigration reform.

Yes, this is sweet. We are in the midst of a national economic crisis. Unemployment continues to skyrocket towards Depression era numbers. Education is being cut at every level. Even Corzine himself reduced state aid for education.

But now his hand-picked panel is advocating giving reduced rates to illegal immigrants to go to college.

In New Jersey it is nigh impossible to get a valid drivers license without a state issued birth certificate with a raised seal, and a half dozen other documents to prove that you are who you say you are.  And this is for law-abiding citizens born and raised here.

But Corzine’s hand-picked panel is going to decree that the state allow people that came into the country flaunting the laws of the land, people driving with fictitious Pennsylvania tags and no insurance be given a privilege that citizens don’t enjoy.

Corruption Chronicles, another great blog has this to add:

A highly touted advisory panel created by a governor seeking to integrate his state’s 400,000 illegal immigrants will recommend issuing “driver privilege cards” and discounted college tuition to illegal aliens.

Claiming that New Jersey is a gateway to America, Governor Jon Corzine created the blue-ribbon panel by executive order in mid 2007 to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for weaving immigrants into the state’s economic, social and civic fabric.

One local newspaper editorial says it would be unconscionable to send out the welcome wagon for those who are here illegally, putting further strain on schools, hospitals and social services. It points out that extending privileges to those who broke the law to get here—and continue breaking the law by staying—tacitly endorses illegal residency and violating federal laws.
